A fire at the Bamboo Lounge in Gary, Indiana. Posted yesterday by Edward Malik. No date given. I love the sign on the door that says "Must be 35 or older".

Along the lines of the media not being allowed on scenes, etc., any idea whatever happened with Mr Malik and GFD not allowing him to video fire scenes Dave?

    • dave statter

I never heard any details and saw in the last few months he was back shooting in Gary on occaision after a long hiatus. Don’t know.

WTF, why are their guys on the fireground without PPE???!!!  C'mon, guys, safety, safety, safety — EVERY time!

  • Chief 62

Things are obviously improving, with the exception of the first in pump operator, assisting the door breech? all had gear on and even scba's. One little item of waist straps hanging down on the first in Captain. None the less compared to a lot of the previous postings, this effort and fireground ops I'll take it, perhaps the coverage and some of our follow-up with the admin of GFD has helped foster improvements thru Statter911's blog. Is it just me or perhaps some new sets of turnout gear have arrived complete with names. All in all these guys and maybe gals? work as hard as Detroit and the fire load isn't any less. If such is the case and its not just an anomoly, good on Gary. Keep it up.

I'm scratching my head with this one …….. Hey Mike , WTF is an understatement! Working fire and you get off the rig with no Scott, helmet, coat open like its a trash can fire and you're supervising from the side! Pump operator no gear, assisting with forcible entry. Thank GOD that a blast of fire didn't blow out while Mr. no PPE opened the door! Lets SMART'N UP people!
Not a good look for GFD, nor The Officer of this Co.
Work like you train, Train like you work!!
    STAY SAFE!!

It pretty much looked like a trash fire to me.

      Working fire? Seriously???

  • Sharppointy1

What the hell were they doing in that bar : "Must be 35 to Enter" ?  Granny grope?  Pin the tail on the Geezer?  Sheesh!

    • dave statter

Schumm resents those remarks. Keep it down out there too, you will wake him.

How old do you have to be to read this blog?

  • CLT FF

They are getting better – maybe it's all the comments they get whenever their videos make it to this website. I do see improvement.

  • WillMega06

This is what happens when you tell Tito Jackson he is cut off!!!

  • Tower5Ladder

Yeah…  I am sure the GFD really cares what a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks who probably never go to fires thinks.

    • Lt. Tony Buckrop, Gary FD Engine Co.5

Honestly, NO we really don't care! It's kind of funny to read what guys that don't go to alot of fires have to say, We really seem to perform very well under our circumstances.  and most of the guys on the job have fought hundreds of fires, so they know what it takes to get the job done.  Alot of Heart & Balls!

Hats off to you Lew!  You guys have an unwinable situation there but keep fighting the good fight.  Keep doing your thing & stay safe!

And quite honestly this would not be considerd a real workin fire in Gary, Thanks everyone foe the comments, keeps things interesting. Lt. Tony B

  • Hoosier

Yeah, no kidding Tower5,  their workload, low staffing, rigs and equipment constantly outta service, plus as Truck 4 drives by you can see its missing an outrigger cover and looks like its been thru some rough years , they definitely have bigger problems to worry about!  Gotta love the safety sallies.

    • Anonymous

Safety sallies. I like that. Wearing PPE properly is for pussies.

  • Tommmy O’

Nice to see that a short staffed engine had the guts and foresight to knock it down via the window. I see alot of armchairing about attacking from the un-burned site.etc..etc..yada yada…
The truth of the matter is that with ever increasing staffing cuts this type of scenario is going to play out nationwide (yes even in the perfect world of some of the quarterbacks on here) and we must adjust our strategies to make do with what we have on hand.
With that being said, we must never sacrifice our safety or the safety of our brothers and sisters. Common sense cant be taught, so maybe all of those that we see running around without proper PPE just dont know any better. We are directly affected by our culture in which we work. Safety starts at the top, and everyone has a responsibility to make sure not only ourselves but those who we are engaging in the battle with do all we can to be safe.

I love the Monday Morning Volley's that sit here & scream about PPE.  Guys, it was $.05 worth of fire in an already vented structure.  The Chauffer was the only guy not geared up & all he did was assist with forcing the door.  The guys in Gary see more fire in a month than most do in a career so relax, they're pretty proficient in what they do.  A "BLAST OF FIRE" out the front door?  Seriously?  And we wonder why a lot of career guys laugh at us…  How about take a lesson for how quickly they got the hose stretched & charged?  The Brothers in Gary are up against a town burning (Search YouTube for fires in Gary & you'll see) & huge budget cuts that have decimated the dept.  They need our support, not petty little criticism over the driver not wearing PPE or "GETTING OFF THE RIG W/Masks on"…

  • TOMMY

TRUE DAT SALTY DAWG…  BUT……………………………….. HELL… TAKE YOUR LOGIC JUST A LITTLE FURTHER AND ITS A TEMPLATE FOR HOW THE START OF THE SOFA SUPER STORE FIRE WAS HANDLED THE FIRST FEW MINUTES RIGHT….???? I MEAN REALLY… RIGHT??CHECK INTO IT AND COMPARE NOTES… SAME BS… OH… WE GOT THIS… JUST ANOTHER ROUTINE FIRE…
JUST READ YOUR COMMENT AGAIN AND BACK TRACK THRU THE CHARLESTON FIRE….. SAME COMPLACENT BS… TRANSPLANTED 700 MILES NORTH BY SOME DAMN HARD WORKING…GOD FEARING… GREAT FIREFIGHTERS THAT MEAN WELL… AND THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE TIME EVERYTHING GOES JUST FINE…. WHICH SETS US UP FOR THE NEXT COMPLACENT MINDSET FIRE THAT MAY KILL ANOTHER BROTHER. C9 RIP!!

  • East of I-57

I was pretty worried about you Gary guys on that one! I am sure these posts will be helpful to you.

  • Hook-n-Ladder 20

There's no excuse for COMPLACENCY! FD's are hurting all over the country, not just Gary IN.
For all the Rah Rah HEROS out there STOP MINIMIZING the situation, Wear your PPE! It might get you home safe to your love ones!
    stay safe!

Yea heart, balls, and ZERO intelligence. You guys may go to thousands of fires but in my opinion you have have done them all wrong.
Sure you are in a bad situation, all the more reason to maximize your safety. No one is talking about not going in, or anything like that but come on eating that nasty smoke, and no PPE forcing a door at a fire, plus the "officer" surpervising from the side and not fully dressed. If you really think thats the way to do business then you got more problems than no money, no staffing, and poor equipment.
Listen dont listen whatever, just know that your setting yourself up for an LODD oh wait you have already had a bunch of those) either while your working, or contracting heart disease, or cancer…its your choice.
Young firefighters out there, training, intelligence, skill, pre planning, no ego, and no complacency is the way to do business in the fire service. Pride on hurts, it never helps, experience is the name people give there mistakes. You do not have to stand outside to be safe, but going in on every fire is also just as unsafe. Be smart, and do the right thing.

  • a real fireman

Why dont' all you guys who have 1 or 2 fires a year and learned how to fight them from an IFSTA book keep you comments to yourself. You have no idea what obstacles are encounted in inner city fires. It is far different than the cosmetic suburbs or rural areas. Granted soemt higns may appear to be complacency, when in reality most of these fires are just bread and butter "another day at the office" fires. When the real fires hit, the guys are in there doing it safely, aggressivley and in a coordinated fashion.
Nobody seems to critisize FDNY, they sent way more guys than are needed to their fires, have a high rate of injuries but are looked at as God's. Get a grip!

I didn't realize that only "real fires" could kill or maim firefighters.  (And not for nothin, we've seen "real" Gary fire ops.  That whole "crawl through the basement window by yourself" thing they love to do looks real coordinated.)
Whatever.  When it's all said and done these guys will be deagging around oxygen tanks or in the ground within 20 years after they retire; the rest of us who paid attention in FF1 will be finishing up a round of golf and heading back home to spoil our grandkids.
they sent way more guys than are needed to their fires
      Interesting.  Define "needed."
