The fire, at 411 Bergenline Avenue in downtown Union City, destroyed the top floor of a four-story multi-family building that housed a supermarket in the ground level, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue officials said.

NHRFR Chief Frank Montagne said the blaze started in a fourth-floor apartment at approximately 3:30 p.m and was not placed under control until after 7 p.m. Montagne said firefighters would be at the scene throughout the night making sure the blaze did not flare up again.
