This story from Missouri City, Texas on Friday has similarities to the incident in February that sent Dallas Fire Rescue Firefighter William Scott Tanksley 56 feet off an icy overpass to his death after being struck by a vehicle while at an accident scene.

KPRC-TV:

A Fort Bend ISD elementary school teacher was in jail Friday night, accused of nearly killing a newly-minted Missouri City police officer, on the job for only three months.

Officer Kenneth Lewis is recovering at Memorial Hermann Hospital after a chain-reaction crash that sent him plunging 30 feet off a bridge, Missouri City Police investigators say.

Investigators say the officer was conducting a traffic stop when a vehicle, traveling eastbound on State Highway 6, struck the rear of his patrol car. The patrol car then slammed into the vehicle the officer had initially stopped, police say.

CBS News:

With the police cruiser bearing down on him, Lewis hoisted himself over the bridge barricade and fell roughly 30 feet, onto rocks on the banks of the Flat Bank Bayou, police told the Houston Chronicle. His partner was unharmed. Lewis, a father of three, is in stable condition and recovering in the hospital, according to KHOU.

“He had a partially ruptured aorta that had to be repaired,” Lt. Paul Poulton told the station. “Now [the doctors] are looking at his fractured pelvis to decide if they have to do surgery on it or not.”
