Virginia firefighter & trooper injured, civilian killed after vehicle plows through crash scene

A Virginia firefighter was injured tonight (Monday) after being hit by a body that was propelled into the air after it was struck by a vehicle. That vehicle ran through an accident scene on Route 288 in Chesterfield County shortly after 5:00 p.m.

The person who was struck had been standing in the median with police and firefighters after the initial crash. The impact killed the civilian, caused minor injuries to the firefighter and serious injuries to a state trooper and another civilian.

Richmond Times-Dispatch:

State police were called to the initial two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Route 288 north of Lucks Lane in Chesterfield County at about 5:14 p.m.

The trooper, one of the drivers and a passenger involved in the crash were standing in the median when another vehicle ran off of Route 288 and struck and killed the pedestrian, according to state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

That pedestrian’s body was thrown by the impact of the vehicle and hit a Chesterfield County firefighter who was on scene for the initial crash, police said. The pedestrian died on the scene. The firefighter was transported to St. Francis Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

The state trooper and the other victim were transported to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

The accident has caused several other accidents in the area on 288S.

Northbound lanes are open. The southbound left lane is closed.
