Caught on video: Fire engine burns in Valparaiso, IN

A Valparaiso firetruck caught fire Thursday about 8:45 a.m at the intersection of U.S 30 and Ind. 2.

“Yes, it was our fire engine that caught fire out there on Highway 30,” Valparaiso Fire Chief David Nondorf said.

According to Nondorf, the fire engine was working properly when the engine sputtered, and smoke and flames came out of the engine compartment. The firefighters sprayed it with an extinguisher, but were unable to put the fire out. A second firetruck was called to the scene.

Erin Guuerra, Post-Tribune:

Three firefighters were bringing the truck from Station 3, at County Roads 220N and 250W, to Station 1, at 205 Indiana Ave., when the crew saw smoke, then flames, coming from the front of the truck. The department had no prvious trouble with the 2007 Seagrave fire truck, Fire Chief David Nondorf said.

“I want to give credit to the duty crew,” Nondorf said, although he declined to name them. “They put on air packs and started removing the equipment (from the truck). That was extremely good thinking.”

Once a second engine arrived, the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, he said.
