Flames engulfed a dry-docked 110-foot luxury yacht at a South Bay shipyard Thursday, sending intense flames and thick smoke into the air alongside San Diego Bay and leaving two people with minor respiratory trauma.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, crews could not board the vessel. They fought it from a safe distance, spraying retardant foam and water from ladder hoses, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Jim Garcia said.
The owner of a $24 million yacht that caught fire in a Chula Vista boat yard Thursday said he cried when he saw online video of the vessel going up in flames.
Larry Jodsass, 79, is a retired electrical engineer, entrepreneur and former chairman of a successful semiconductor company who now lives in Minnesota.
He said the news of his yacht catching fire at a dry dock was nothing short of devastating.
