There is no doubt Chief Kirk Kelley is sincere and believes in what he’s doing. As we reported last month, Chief Kelley wants a new firehouse for the Lehigh, Iowa department and has been frustrated by the inability to raise money for the project. That’s why he decided to do a hunger strike until he reaches the goal of $480,000.

In 23 days he has lost 28 pounds and gained $4760. That’s $170 per pound. By my calculation, at this rate the chief would have to lose an additional 2795 pounds to reach his goal.

Despite that, the chief isn’t giving in.

Vanessa Peng, KCCI-TV:

He said he won’t eat until they raise the money for the new station.

“My body keeps telling me, ‘Why do you keep doing it?'” said Kelley.

It’s been nearly a month of two protein shakes a day and an occasional cup of fruit juice or bowl of chicken broth.

“I did about pass out once; I’m not going to lie. I sat down really quick and I stood back up and I got light headed and had to sit back down,” said Kelley.

“I needed to get our name out there. We’ve tried about everything (to raise money) and failed,” said Kelley.
