A Hillsboro man and woman were able to safely escape their burning home Saturday with the help of neighbors, firefighters say.

The sound of breaking glass alerted the couple as well as neighbors to possible trouble at the home in the 1800 block of Northeast Ninth Avenue around 8:15 p.m., according to Bruce Montgomery, a Hillsboro Fire Department spokesman. Neighbors called 911 as smoke and flames were seen coming from the home and also helped the man and woman out of the home.

The fire started on the back deck, moved to the back wall of the nearby garage and to the attic of the home, Montgomery said.
