Two Cleveland firefighters face criminal charges after fire truck wreck

OH Cleveland fire

Just 11 days before the 40th anniversary of the resignation of the President of the United States over a little incident that brought us the phrase “it’s not the crime it’s the cover-up”, two Cleveland, Ohio firefighters make it clear they were dozing during the Watergate portion of their history class. For apparently failing to learn that valuable lesson, Captain Ronald Vargo and Firefighter Richard Nickerson are facing criminal charges after their rig hit a light pole on June 21 causing $20,000 in damage.

According to Mary Kilpatrick at Northeast Ohio Media Group, the original story from the two men was that a white car cut off the rig causing the crash. But what caused that story to fall apart is what causes many cover-ups to go down in flames these days, security camera footage:

“It is alleged that during the investigation of the accident both men lied to the investigating officer,” (spokesman Maureen) Harper said.

Vargo and Nickerson were charged with falsification Thursday in Cleveland Municipal Court. The charge is a misdemeanor. It carries a sentence of a maximum of 180 days in jail.

Vargo is a 23-year veteran of the department, and Nickerson is in his 17th year, a Cleveland Mayor spokesman said.
