An extra alarm fire broke out in a storage building on the West Side Thursday afternoon, sending up thick black smoke and prompting a hazardous materials alert to be called.
The fire started around 3:30 p.m. on the roof of a storage building at 3909 W. Harrison Street, officials said. It was raised to a 3-11 alarm shortly before 4 p.m. and was brought under control by 4:30 p.m.
Propane tanks in the building exploded, but there were no reports of injuries, fire officials said.
