It’s the two dogs that barely escape the fireball coming down the hallway that has the TV networks interested in this Detroit story. But after we all get over the oohs and ahs as the pooches race back into the apartment just in time let’s not lose sight of the fact that this was an apartment house full of people that the jerk in this video tried to burn on Sunday.

WXYZ-TV:

The incident happened Sunday night around 7:30 p.m. You can see the man pouring gasoline up and down the hallway, two dogs come out of an apartment–likely from smelling the gas– and then he nearly lights the animals on fire.

Detroit News:

“He didn’t know what he was doing, but this was a fully occupied apartment with lots of women and children,” said firefighter Paul Fillmore of Engine 52. “If this guy had known what he was doing, he could have killed a lot of people.”

Two dogs emerge from an apartment, presumably because of the scent of gasoline, then scurry back inside. Moments later, the hallway is engulfed in flames. The man also lit a fire in the stairway.

Sprinklers quickly extinguished the blazes. Water damage is extensive and about 30-40 people were forced out of their apartments, Fillmore said. Some were referred to the Red Cross for help.
