9:20 P.M. update: Fire captain suffered second degree burns to his hands, back and an arm, fire spokesman said. Being treated at a hospital, but expected to recover.
Search resumed for person missing from the house.
EARLIER
The fire was first reported just before 6 p.m. at the home in the Timber Trace subdivision in south Kansas City. There was a report of a family member trapped inside the home, said James Garrett, Kansas City Fire Department spokesman. The firefighter entered the basement of the house.
A mayday call was issued, and the firefighter was removed because of burns and other injuries and taken to the University of Kansas Hospital.
According to authorities on the scene of the fire, the firefighter had to be pulled from the burning basement of a house at 501 West 123rd Terrace.
He was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital with “burns to his extremities” along with “some other injuries,”: according to Kansas City Battalion Chief James Garrett. Garrett said the full of his injuries are unknown at this time.
Authorities also said a person in the home at the time the fire remains unaccounted for. As of 7:00 pm, the search for the individual had been called off and all firefighters pulled from the home.
