Detroit Free Press:

A three-mile radius has been evacuated around a massive deadly pileup on I-94 as four semis burn, including one with hazardous material and another hauling fireworks.Michigan State Police say a trucker from Ottawa, Canada, has died and multiple others are injured. People who are not injured were taken to warming centers, according to State Police Inspector Tracey McAndrew.

“Hazmat officials believe that hazardous material that was on scene is probably entirely burned off by now, so what we’re asking for now is for shelter in place, where anyone within one mile of the crash scene, we’re just asking them if they have not evacuated to stay inside,” said Michigan State Police Lieutenant Rick Pazder.

WOOD-TV:

Both directions of I-94 are closed west of Battle Creek due to two pileups including as many as 150 vehicles and one fatality, but a shelter-in-place order has been lifted, according to Michigan State Police Lt. Rick Pazder.

Michigan State Police put the one-mile radius shelter-in-place order in effect for a short time from I-94 at the 90 mile marker, which is located near 44th Street in Charleston Township, due to the lingering concern of hazardous materials that might not have yet burned off in the fire. A three-mile radius evacuation order that centered on the same location was also previously lifted. Both directions of I-94 were shut down shortly after 10 a.m. between the Galesburg and Climax exits (exits 88 and 92) after pileups occurred in both the eastbound and westbound lanes.
