Quite an interesting story from a house fire Wednesday morning on 17th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama. When the first firefighters arrived they found the road blocked by a police department vehicle with no police around to move it. That’s when a woman in the neighborhood came to the rescue.

Chris Womack, WIAT-TV:

A fire company out on another call saw the fire and called it in. However, when the responding unit got near the house they encountered a problem: a police car. Two Birmingham police officers had responded to the scene and one had blocked the intersection near the burning home to prevent onlookers from crowding around. That police officer was about a hundred yards away doing what he could to help around the burning home. As he began to run back towards his car, a bystander named Sheshe Williams jumped in the vehicle and pulled it forward far enough for the fire engine to squeeze by. She immediately jumped out of the car as soon as the engine passed. “I just moved it out the street,” she said afterwards. “I was trying to save a life.”

While Williams’ actions could have saved the fire from spreading, it is not recommended to jump in any car that is not yours, let alone a police car. An officer on the scene did tell WIAT that in this instance no charges would be filed.
