UPDATE: Houston FD Captain Dwight Bazile in extremely critical condition after collapsing at fire

FRIDAY UPDATE

Here is the latest from the Houston Fire Department at 10:43 a.m. CT:

HFD Captain Dwight W. Bazile, Station 46 D shift, is currently fighting for his life at Memorial Herman Hospital.

Captain Bazile and his crew responded to a report of people trapped in a house fire at England and Crosby in Southeast Houston just before 7 p.m. last night, February 19, 2015. After exiting the house fire, he collapsed and HFD medical staff immediately initiated CPR and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is receiving the best care possible.

Captain Bazile entered the Houston Fire Department in October of 1977 and has served most of his career from Fire Station 46 in Southeast Houston. He was promoted to Captain in 2008.

Captain Bazile is currently in extremely critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. We also ask that citizens of Houston continue to keep Captain Bazile and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Per family request, we are not releasing a photo at this time.

THURSDAY

A press conference around 9:30 p.m. CT from Houston officials indicates that Captain Dwight Bazile of Engine 46 collapsed after walking out of a burning duplex this (Thursday) evening and is in extremely critical condition. CPR was started on the 37-year veteran of the department. All indications are Captain Bazile suffered from a medical emergency. Bazile is assigned to StationĀ 46. Ten-years-ago today, Captain Grady Burke from the same fire station died when the roof of a burning abandoned home collapsed.

Mike Glenn, Houston Chronicle:

HFD Capt. Dwight Bazile led his crew of firefighters into the burning house in 6400 block of England about 6:45 p.m. after they received reports that people may be inside.

HFD officials said he wasn’t feeling well and walked back outside. “He sat himself down on a stretcher and collapsed right there,” HFD Capt. Ruy Lozano said.

Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts as they rushed Bazile to Memorial Hermann Hospital at the Texas Medical Center.

On the same day in 2005, HFD Capt. Grady Burke, 39, died while battling a fire inside a vacant house in the 8500 block of Brandon.

KTRK-TV:

Authorities say Dwight Bazile, a 37-year HFD veteran who works out of Station 46, had suffered some kind of medical emergency. Bazile was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where authorities say he is in “extremely critical” condition.

“Any time a firefighter is injured, it’s a concern,” Mayor Annise Parker said. “This appears to be a medical emergency rather than a fire-related injury.”

The mood is especially somber because Thursday also marked the 10th anniversary of a fatal fire in which another HFD Engine 46 captain died on the job. Capt. Grady Burke was killed February 19, 2005, when the roof of an abandoned home collapsed during a firefight in southeast Houston.

KHOU-TV:

This appears to have been a medical emergency rather than related to the fire,” said Mayor Annise Parker.”This was a serious medical incident. We don’t know the outcome at this point, but he is very, very ill.”

Parker did not elaborate on what type of medical condition he suffered.

According to the Jay Evans, spokesman for HFD, firefighters arrived to heavy smoke coming from a duplex. During their search through the house, Bazile walked out to the street and collapsed, Evans said.

Bazile has a wife and a son, who’s currently away at college. Bazile will be further evaluated in the morning.
