The fire was reported at 11:41 a.m. Monday in Mount Carmel, about 60 miles north of Harrisburg in Northumberland County. Lt. Chris Duhay of the Mount Carmel police department said the flames had spread to seven row homes.

He said James Reed Sr., chief of American Hose Fire Company in Mount Carmel, collapsed within one of the structures. Reed was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where an official said he was listed in critical condition Monday night.

Eric Scicchitano, NewsItem.com:

A paramedic pumped at Reed’s chest for three tense minutes as he lay motionless. Others helped intubate Reed and monitor his heart rate. Firefighters huddled around as the active scene came to a momentary halt.
The gurney was rolled to an awaiting ambulance a half-block away, and Reed was taken to Mount Carmel Area High School where a Life Flight helicopter awaited. He was conscious while loaded onto the aircraft.

Reed’s son, James Jr., wrote on Facebook Monday afternoon as word spread about his dad.
“Thanks for the thoughts and good wishes. I know everyone is worried about him only thing we know right now is that he has some burns in his airway and  is being transferred to Lehigh Valley Burn Unit,” he wrote.
