Texas firefighter forced out after Facebook post in praise of Charleston shooter

UPDATE – Former Texas firefighter says comment taken out of context

A volunteer firefighters in Mabank, Texas was thrown out of his department after posting on a South Carolina newspaper’s Facebook page a message in support of the man charged with murdering nine members of Charleston’s Charleston Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night.

Mabank volunteer firefighter Kurtis Cook reportedly posted on a South Carolina newspaper’s Facebook page that the confessed Charleston church shooter, Dylann Roof, “needs to be praised for the good deed he has done.”

His post was shared across social media, calling for people to call the Mabank Fire Department asking to have the volunteer removed from the department. Mabank Fire Department leaders said, on social media, that they were investigating the allegations on Friday morning.

The Mabank FD’s first acknowledgement of the issue was at 10:52 a.m. CT Friday in a Facebook post that read:

The Mabank Fire Department Command Staff is in the process of investigating the allegations being made of Firefighter Kurtis Cook. The Command Staff wants the public to know that the MFD takes these allegations seriously and will take the appropriate actions.

By 11:50 a.m. CT the leadership of Mabank FD learned all they needed to know about the Facebook post and issued this statement:
