70 large scale fireworks go off in fire station injuring firefighter & boy
A firefighter and a 12-year-old boy have been burned and a Utah town’s only fire engine and ambulance were damaged after large-scale fireworks went off inside the firehouse yesterday (Thursday).
The firefighter, Austin Winkle, was apparently preparing the fireworks for a show to be held in Marysvale, a southern Utah town of about 400 residents. He was airlifted to a hospital with burns to his hands and face.
It isn’t clear how the firework mortars were set off, Gleave said, but one exploded and led to a chain reaction. A nearby 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was reportedly hit by a mortar in the back and suffered a small burn. He was also treated for carbon monoxide inhalation.

Michael McFall, The Salt Lake Tribune:
It’s difficult to relate the sound that followed, as 70 to 80 fireworks went off inside the metal fire house, she (Councilwoman Ann Kennedy) said.
A medical helicopter arrived and the firefighter who was holding the first firework was flown to a burn center. His hands, arms, and part of neck and face were injured, Kennedy said.
A fire truck from the nearby town of Junction arrived and doused the flames, which also damaged an ambulance and Maryvale’s own firetruck.
