UPDATED – Video: Large fire at Las Vegas hotel & casino

KVVU-TV:

At least two people were burned by a fire at the Cosmopolitan hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The fire was reported at 12:15 p.m.

According to Clark County Fire Chief Erik Newman, the fire happened on the 14th floor of the resort property.

Las Vegas Sun:

A witness who was on the Bamboo Pool deck during the blaze told the Sun that employees think the fire was started by a cigarette tossed from one of the hotel’s top floors, or possibly discarded by a guest at the pool, into a bush on the pool deck.

The witness said the fire consumed half the cabanas around the pool in less than a minute. Guests were running and screaming as the fire spread “ridiculously fast,” and the entire pool deck area was quickly evacuated.

Clark County spokeswoman Sandra Baker said crews with the Clark County Fire Department extinguished the flames, trying to clear the smoke and checking the adjoining building to be sure the fire had not spread. Las Vegas Fire & Medical crews also assisted at the scene.

KSNV-TV:

One victim was transported to the hospital. Another with a minor injury is currently being evaluated on the scene.

According to Fire Chief Greg Cassell, the fire was successfully extinguished a half hour after firefighters arrived. Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from reaching the building, though some smoke reached the inside the building due to guests opening their balcony doors to see what was happening. Crews said it will take a few hours to entirely clear the building of smoke.

As of 1:30, people are being let back into the casino.
