As firefighters fought the fire, police got a call for a woman with a knife, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. The woman confronted the officer with the knife, she said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not clear. Video from the scene shows only a small part of the confrontation.

Lanier said the officer made multiple calls to the woman, asking her to drop the knife. The officer fired one round, Lanier said.

Sources tell News4 the woman was shot in the shoulder. She is said to be in stable condition at an area hospital.

Clarence Williams & Martin Weil, The Washington Post:

Police and firefighters were sent to Clay Terrace after a fire was reported, Lanier said. On the way, she said, officers were told of someone there with a knife. They found a woman holding “multiple knives,” Lanier said.

In interviews, two witnesses said that when police encountered the woman, she had a knife, which they described as relatively small.

One witness, Gerald McBrayer, said she held “a little steak knife” and received no warning. Another witness, Nathan Strickland, said the woman had a steak knife with what he described as a “skinny,” 6-to-8-inch blade.
