Mass resignation from Ohio volunteer fire department

The news coverage, so far, doesn’t provide a lot of specifics to explain exactly why all but one member of the Ohio’s West Elkton Gratis Township Fire Department resigned Tuesday. But most of the coverage cites a poor relationship with the Village of Gratis Township Fire Department that also provides fire coverage for the area.

WDTN-TV:

Before they resigned, West Elkton Gratis Township Fire Department was one of two fire departments serving the residents of Gratis Township. Now, the Village of Gratis Township will be the main fire department serving both the Village of Gratis and Gratis Township.

According to Gratis Township Trustee Jerry Thomas, both fire departments have “had a long history of not getting along”. Thomas said they’re giving the volunteers a 72-hour window to reconsider their resignations.

WKEF-TV:

Fire Chief Johnny Cassidy and all but one of the volunteers resigned last night. They resigned because of a dispute with Gratis Township Trustees over how the departments would handle emergency responses, among other things.
