Watch this: Off-duty Nashville firefighter rescues dog from burning home

On the video above from Frog4System you hear the videographer say, “Some idiot went in there to get that dog. He goes, ‘I do this for a living.'”

That “idiot” who does “this for a living” is Tim Tawater, a 20-year veteran of the Nashville Fire Department. Tawater was already late for his daughter’s birthday party on Saturday when he saw smoke.

Tawater followed that smoke to a home in White House, Tennessee and began a search. It turned out no one was home except the dog … an 85-pound dog.

Nicole Young, The Tennessean:

“There were no people inside, which was a good thing. I came back out and noticed the dog standing at the door.”

When Tawater tried to approach the dog, it ran back in the house, he said.

“If someone has a dog that big in the house, it means that dog is family,” he said, adding that the dog, a bouvier des Flandres, weighed roughly 85 pounds.

“I couldn’t do anything about the property, but I could save that dog. I thought it was worth a chance,” he said. “I’m a strong believer in the fact that God has called me to do this, and he’s going to protect me until I’m done.”
