MCI on Vegas strip: Car plows into large crowd outside Miss Universe contest

M. Alex Johnson, NBC News:

One person was killed and 37 others were injured Sunday night when a driver plowed into pedestrians on the crowded Las Vegas Strip in what police described as a “major accident.”

At least seven of the injured were in critical condition, Las Vegas police Lt. Peter Boffelli said. He said that it hadn’t yet been determined whether the driver, who was undergoing drug and alcohol tests, drove into the crowd intentionally.

Pashtana Usufzy, Las Vegas Sun:

The crash occurred as the 2015 Miss Universe pageant was airing live from inside Planet Hollywood.

Clark County Fire Department spokesman Jeff Buchanan said patients in critical condition were transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center and University Medical Center.

“This is a huge tragedy that has occurred on our Strip,” Boffelli said.

The woman driving the car that struck pedestrians fled the scene and was taken into custody at the Tuscany, near Flamingo and Koval Lane.
