Video: 7 firefighters hurt during Pittsburgh house fire

Seven firefighters were taken to the hospital after responding to an early morning house fire in Wilkinsburg. Some of those firefighters had to jump from the second floor of the home to escape.

The fire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday at a house along Ross Avenue.
In addition to the firefighters injured an occupant of the house was also hurt.

According to Pittsburgh Public Information Officer Sonya Toler, crews rescued a woman from the second floor window.

This cellphone video from a CH 11 viewer shows what firefighters were up against when they responded to a house fire in Wilkinsburg this morning. “The fire started accelerating quickly. Some of our firefighters literally had to jump for their lives,” Ms. Toler said.

The elderly woman, who was not identified, was in stable condition at UPMC Mercy, she said.

The firefighters were taken to local hospitals with injuries, some suffered after they jumped from the two-story house, she said. Three were admitted to UPMC Mercy, two with broken bones and one with burns, according to a statement from the city’s public safety department. The firefighter who suffered burns is listed in stable/good condition, the statement said.
