Police defend firefighters after posting picture of ladder truck swamped by rising storm water

The mayor of Sea Isle New Jersey says the storm was worse than Sandy. Long-time residents believe you have to go back to 1962 to top what this weekend brought to Sea Isle.
The Sea Isle Police Department has been very active on Facebook and Twitter throughout the storm. The police posted the image above on Facebook. It has been shared about 2000 times and has almost 350 comments (as of Sunday evening).
Some of those comments have been critical of the firefighters getting into such a situation on the way to a structure fire during the storm. The police department isn’t just letting that stand. They’ve added a number of comments painting a different picture, including these two:
Sea Isle City Police Department There are a lot of first responders Monday morning quarter backing these guys. Anyone that was on the island knows that we experienced flooding that hasn’t been seen here since 62′. We aren’t talking about height, we are talking about how rapidly the water rose. Streets literally flooded with feet of water in a matter of mins. A road that was passable mins ago quickly became impassable with little to no warning. Just keep that in mind as the comments continue.Â
Sea Isle City Police Department Just a quick heads up everybody. We posted this picture so that others could see what our small town was coping with during this epic storm, not to set up a forum to bash our FD. The support has been overwhelming and you don’t have to agree with what happened but Please remember that this is a public forum. That means that our children can and do read these posts too. Some people are getting heated and the last thing we want to do is police this post. (We literally have better things to do) You have the freedom of speech and that is important but please help us keep this site family friendly.
