Caught on camera: Fire captain’s quick hands save son at MLB spring training game

Marion County (FL) Fire Rescue Captain Shaun Cunningham’s quick reflexes saved his eight-year-old son Landon from serious injury when a bat went flying during an Atlanta Braves – Pittsburgh Pirates spring training game over the weekend.

Father and son were sitting three rows behind the Braves dugout. Landon was sending pictures from father’s phone to his mother and sister when bat came toward him.

Austin Miller, The Gainesville Sun:

At that moment Danny Ortiz, a left fielder with the Pirates, swung at a pitch.

Ortiz missed, his bat slipped out of his hand and flew in the direction of Landon.

The boy’s father, seeing the bat coming at full speed for his son’s face, stuck his left arm out. The bat struck his wrist and left forearm. He said it ricocheted and fell behind them.

Cunningham said a part of the bat hit his son’s left shoulder, but it wasn’t “serious,” and it didn’t leave a mark. He said he evaluated his son and the boy was fine.
