UPDATE

As many of us suspected, the police officer is a volunteer firefighter with the same department. The chief of the Salem Fire Department left this comment on the STATter911 Facebook page:

Fred Ayars: I am the Chief of Salem Fire Department. Mike is one of my guys. He never put himself in harms way while the crew was getting ready. I have no issue with what he did. He helped bring this situation to a safe conclusion.

When firefighters arrived they found fire and smoke coming from the windows and door of Unit 75 on the first floor, according to Washington Fire Company Battalion Chief John A. Pelura III.

Firefighters laid lines to water supplies and forced open the apartment door and began battling the blaze which was quickly extinguished.
