On the same day Atlantic City Fire Department officials told reporters about the number of Narcan saves by firefighters, two of the department’s firefighters were targeted by New Jersey State Police drug sting. It was June 21 when the firefighters, Eric Funk and Matthew Doherty, were arrested and charged with buying fake heroin outside Fire Station 1 from an undercover police officer. Funk has been on the department for five years and Doherty for three.

Lynda Cohen, Press of Atlantic City:

Funk, 39, paid about $20 for a couple of bags, and was in uniform when he made the purchase June 21, according to the report. Funk’s 2016 salary is $75,030, according to Press records.

Doherty, 33, didn’t have money, and instead exchanged a watch for the drug. His 2016 salary is $51,000, according to Press records.

Both men were then arrested for possession of imitation heroin, a third-degree crime.
Funk also was found in possession of the prescription opioid Subutex along with a syringe and some empty glycerine baggies. He was given additional disorderly persons charges for possession of a prescription drug without a prescription, and for the possession of the syringe.
