In Wappingers Falls, New York, a man was rescued early this (Monday) morning from his burning attic apartment on Diddell Road by the first arriving fire chief. New Hackensack Fire Chief Anthony Marquez went into the apartment alone shortly after midnight. The chief was told by police there was someone still inside the burning building. The officers had to back out because of smoke and heat.

Marquez then entered the building himself, climbing the stairs to the attic. The blaze had begun in the attic kitchen, he said.

He made his way though the apartment, searching for the man. Marquez called it a “quick search.”

“They told me he was up the stairs and to the right. There was two doors, a living room and then the kitchen,” Marquez said. “I had to search the living room and kitchen, then I searched the closet and the bathroom.”

In the bathroom, MaRquez found the man unconscious but breathing.
