This is quite an interesting video. It appears a lightning hit the aluminum canopy of a Chicago Transit Authority station last (Sunday) night. Part of the canopy collapsed onto the Blue Line tracks and sent electricity through the rest of the structure that was still standing. The video shows the arcing and sparking at the station and the portion that ended up on the tracks. No injuries occurred, according to news reports.

WMAQ-TV:

Blue Line trains were halted Sunday evening due to a possible lightning strike hitting the tracks, according to the Chicago Transit Authority and fire officials.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the canopy along a pedestrian ramp collapsed at the Illinois Medical District station located at 430 S. Damen Ave on Chicago’s Near West Side, according to the CTA.

The CTA tweeted just after 7 p.m. that trains were standing at Illinois Medical District due to an obstruction and crews were working to restore service.
