FDNY captain/rapper makes news with anti-cop lyrics

Video above is one of many songs on Ka’s YouTube Channel. The New York Post’s Edelman says his Twitter feed projects an “anti-cop image.”

F- -k them cops and swats with night vision. I see your traps and your plots to dead us, y’all rolling with Kojaks, n- - -a, I got Berettas.

The New York Post’s Susan Edelman, who has broken many controversial FDNY stories, today (Sunday) has another one. In it, she features the words above from a 2013 recording by a rap artist known as Ka.

Ka, according to Edelman, is also FDNY Captain Kaseem Ryan who is assigned to Engine 235 in Bedford Stuyvesant. Even though Ryan, as Ka, has rapped with Wu Tang Clan’s GZA and three-years-ago found his work making a Village Voice list of best recording, he has reportedly tried to keep his music career hidden at work.

Susan Edleman, The New York Post:

“I’m living two lives, man. I’m trying to be who I am in the day and then trying to feed my soul at night with being the artist that I want to be,” Ka said in a 2015 interview, without revealing his FDNY job.

“The biases he portrays through his music are indicative of what he believes or feels,” said Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association.

“As a New York City firefighter, he should be trying to bring people together rather than fracture relationships, especially in communities of color.”

Reached at his firehouse, Ryan hung up the phone.
