Several days after an NJ Transit police officer pulled a man from the tracks at Secaucus Junction seconds before the arrival of an oncoming train, he said he would do it again.
“It’s part of the job,” Officer Victor Ortiz, a 16-year veteran of the NJ Transit police, said Monday in a phone interview conducted while he was on vacation.
Ortiz has been credited with saving the life of Alan Jefferson, 56, after Jefferson lay on the tracks at Secaucus Junction on Friday morning. A 34-second video of the incident shows Ortiz wrangling with Jefferson – whose face is obscured in the clip – before eventually overpowering and dragging him to safety. Seconds later, a train barrels into the frame.
