Day after our column we now know first company getting slammed for wrapping itself in 9/11

KPRC-TV:

A San Antonio mattress company that aired a “Twin Tower sale” video is closing its store on the city’s Northwest Side indefinitely.

“Effective immediately, our Miracle Mattress store will be closed indefinitely. We will be silent through the 9/11 Anniversary to avoid any further distractions from a day of recognition and remembrance for the victims and their families,” owner Mike Bonanno said in a statement. “We take full responsibility for our actions and sincerely regret the hurt and pain caused by this disrespectful advertising campaign.”

The 20-second video opened with three people standing in front of two stacks of mattresses. The ad said mattresses would be on sale for the price of a twin mattress. Two men are then “thrown back” into two stacks of mattresses, causing them to fall over. At the end of the video, the woman is heard saying, “We will never forget.”

Joshua Fechter & Madalyn Mendoza, San-Antonio Express-News:

Bonanno told WOAI-TV that they decided to close the store after receiving death threats. Mattress Miracle, an unrelated store in Ontario, Canada, also was targeted with threats this week, it said Friday on Facebook.

“To be clear: we are not affiliated with this company in any way, shape or form,” the post from the Canadian mattress company reads.

San Antonio Police Department spokesman Jesse Salame said the department has not received complaints of threats and is not investigating any active credible threats against the store or its employees. FBI spokeswoman Michelle Lee declined to comment.

Miracle Mattress owner Mike Bonanno, whose daughter Cherise made the video, issued a third apology this week that was posted on the store’s doors Friday: “Effective immediately, our Miracle Mattress store will be closed indefinitely. We will be silent through the 9/11 anniversary to avoid any further distractions from a day of recognition and remembrance for the victims and their families. We take full responsibility for our actions and sincerely regret the hurt and pain caused by this disrespectful advertising campaign.”
