Greg Bock, Altoona Mirror:

Thick smoke was already pouring down Mill Run Road as Logan Township firefighters arrived at The Island bar Tuesday afternoon, and within minutes the decision was made to stay out of the labyrinth-like nightclub.

“With the volume of fire and the construction of the building, the Newburg chief (Fred Schwarze) made the decision to switch to the defensive and make it an exterior operation,” Logan Township Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Blake said at the scene.

The call came in at 4:14 p.m., and the first crews were at the Mill Run bar within 10 minutes. Smoke from the blaze could be seen throughout the area, and Blake said there was heavy fire in the center of the building, one that has had numerous remodeling over the years and was made of wood. The flames were also moving along the roofline in the attic, and within 30 minutes the roof collapsed.
