Massena Fire Chief Bill Kearns said the wind made it difficult to battle the fire. Heavy smoke enveloped the building, and the upper level was lit with flames as firefighters trained their hose to that area.
“With winds and stuff, it just went right through to the top. It went inside the chimney and up through into the attic. The winds was pushing it right through the whole place,” Mr. Kearns said.
The blaze also damaged the siding and windows of a neighboring home.
