WARNING: The video above shows a man being shot and resuscitation efforts by police officers.

In the City of Orange, California police first used a fire hose to deal with a man who an officer then fatally shot Sunday night. Police say the man was armed with a knife when the officer opened fire. An Orange Police Department spokesman says the fire hose was used because officers smelled gasoline and believed 33-year-old Michael Anthony Perez might set fire to the van he had been driving.

According to police, Perez first refused to stop his vehicle for an officer. When the vehicle pulled over, officers say Perez had a canister containing a liquid that smelled like gasoline. The Orange Fire Department was called and the man poured the liquid on a rag and lit a cigarette.

Hailey Branson-Potts, Los Angeles Times:

“At this point, the officers were no longer concerned about the traffic ticket,” Lopez said. “It was, do we have a suicide? Do we have other incendiary devices inside the vehicle? That’s why a plan was devised to get him out of the vehicle.”

Police officers broke Perez’s passenger window with batons, Lopez said, and then used a fire hose to spray high-pressure water into the vehicle. Video captured at the scene shows the man moving around inside the vehicle before crawling out of the driver’s side window.

Lopez said Perez reached behind his back and “at some point, he brandished a knife.” Video shows at least seven officers surrounding the vehicle.

Officers “deployed less lethal munition, but it was ineffective,” Thorsen said. One officer “fired a single round, which struck the suspect in the upper torso,” he said.
