A massive fire Monday afternoon at an apartment building under construction at a multimillion-dollar development on College Boulevard in Overland Park sparked blazes at numerous homes blocks away.
The eight-alarm fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. Monday in a four-story unoccupied apartment building in the City Place development at the southwest corner of College Boulevard and Nieman Road.
Firefighters responding to the fire could see “tremendous smoke and fire,” a fire department spokesman said.

Firefighters have battled at least 12 house fires in connection to the initial apartment fire. Residents have been advised to spray down their homes.
“It’s a bit of a war zone here,” said Jason Rhodes, public information officer for the Overland Park Fire Department. “This is such a big incident, we’ve pulled and asked for help from neighbors all over the county. All the fire departments are sending people to help us. At this point we’re trying to get our arms around this incident. Get this thing slowed down, set up a good command structure so we can really communicate and work as effectively as possible.”
