A six-alarm fire that broke out in a multi-million dollar residential building under construction in Dorchester Wednesday sent plumes of black wafting through the air.

The six-story building at 1971-77 Dorchester Ave. was in the final phase of construction, with several condominium units already sold and apartments leased to the first wave of residents who were due to arrive on July 15, officials said.

Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said inspections were due to start later this week on the structure which he called a “very dangerous building.”

The structure is made of “trusses, wood-stick constructed building” and a “first floor of steel,” Finn said, at an early evening press briefing.
