When I first posted the pre-arrival house fire video (above) from Lakeland, Florida on Tuesday, I told you there was a lot going on in the somewhat wild video. This includes lots of people walking around near the burning home, a car with items on the hood driven across the grass, an arrest of one of the residents for arson and a man in civilian clothes putting the first water on the fire.
One thing I didn’t know at the time, is the man in civvies with the attack line is an off-duty Polk County Fire and Rescue captain who is also the union president. Jay Schwartz first makes an appearance with hose in hand at 1:41 into the video while on-duty firefighters don their masks. According to John Chambliss, a reporter at The Ledger, a complaint has been filed against Schwartz and an investigation is now under way.
A captain with Polk County Fire and Rescue is under internal investigation for fighting a house fire earlier this month in North Lakeland while he was off duty.
A complaint has been filed against firefighter Jay Schwartz, who is also union president of the Polk County IAFF Local 3531, county officials said.
“There are allegations against him working at a scene while he was off duty,” said Joe Halman, deputy county manager. “Once we get all the facts we’ll determine if there were any violations of policy.”
