Witnesses in Daytona Beach watched as a woman drove her van full of children into the ocean Tuesday evening.
Bystanders and lifeguards jumped to the rescue and pulled the mother and her children out of the van as it was filling with water.
In video taken by Simon Besner, a tourist from Canada, the woman can be seen outside the van as lifeguards try to pull her children from the vehicle. Waves nearly pushed her under the van.
One lifeguard is seen walking out of the surf with two children in his arms.
Investigators said the woman was incoherent when they tried to speak with her.
Waves pounded the minivan, making it difficult for rescuers to pry open the doors, but they eventually grabbed the third child and brought the little one to safety.
The mother also made it out of the vehicle safely. She and the children were taken to nearby Halifax Health Medical Center.
Investigators said they are working to determine what caused the woman to veer into the ocean.
The mother, who was not immediately identified, was undergoing a mental evaluation at the hospital.
