Quick takes

Getting out the message: A gathering Wednesday afternoon of fire service leaders, including US Fire Administrator Greg Cade and some East Coast chiefs talk about the deadly holiday season. The large number of multiple-fatality fires has caused great concern. Click the image above to see STATter 911 contributor and 9NEWS NOW multi-media journalist Greg Guise’s video from the event. The message from USFA is getting some coverage around the country, click here for a list of articles.

“3 kids dies screaming in a fire”: On the same day as the event above that’s the headline from Chicago. Once again no working smoke alarms in the South Chicago apartment. Read the details. Watch the story.

Overexposure: Some think it is news. Others think not. Either way the pictures are out there for all to see. A member (or is it more than one?) of Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department exposing himself at what the chief is calling a private party at a nearby bar. A DC insignia on a sweatshirt of the bottomless firefighter and on the t-shirt of one of those watching the event has prompted an internal affairs investigation by DC Fire & EMS. Dunkirk has issued a statement about the pictures. Also, from reading our comments there is an impression among some of our readers that the pictures showing a firefighter exposing himself came from Dunkirk’s website. St. Mary’s Today publisher Ken Rossignol says those photos were sent to him in an email. The other pictures were from the now defunct Dunkirk5.com. Read the details here.

The inkspots: No, not the old singing group, a group of firefighters from Ohio. A fire at Flint Inks in Woodlawn has ruined almost $50,000 worth of gear. Who will pay for the ink stained PPE? Click here.

It isn’t just Dave who likes Street View: As many of you know I have been making liberal use of Google’s Street View here on STATter 911. Great for those before and after shots of fires and to view the neighborhood where the emergency occurred. The Internet tool was a key in the solving of the recent case of a child abducted by her grandmother. Here’s the story.

From worst to first?: That’s the question in the headline of an article on JEMS.com looking at EMS in the nation’s capital. Read it here.

911 calls from Florida fire: We told you yesterday about the fire in Milton, Florida that damaged an old theater and destroyed businesses. Here are the 911 calls from the blaze.

Theft by fire chief: That’s now the charge in Huntertown, Indiana and FireGeezer has the update.
