Iowa city outfits police with two firefighting SUVs

In Cedar Falls, Iowa police now have two SUVs with water, foam and hose that will allow them to fight fires before the fire department arrives on the scene. The fire department also has been assigned a third similarly configured SUV.

You have to wonder if the police will be properly trained and provided full PPE. If not, what liability will Cedar Falls face if an officer is injured? Sounds like a question for FireLawBlog.com‘s Curt Varone.

“We had a house fire that started on College Hill and that particular fire was a grill and it ultimately destroyed the entire house,” said (Cedar Falls Police Department Lt. Dan) Brown.

Lieutenant Brown says they were the first ones on the scene that day and the new unit would have been helpful. 

“This tool is really pretty powerful. It can really help out at a fire scene particularly if it’s at a critical stage. You could have a deck that’s on fire and then it moves up the side of a house that kind of thing,” said Jeff Olson, Director of Safety Services.
