Overturned rig brings drunk driving charge against deputy chief in Readington, NJ

NJ Readington Township tanker crash drunken driving

Readington VFC Tender 32 overturned while responding to a call on March 1 in Readington Township, New Jersey. At the wheel was Deputy Chief Ken Apsley, 54, who was trapped in the rig and suffered a concussion. Readington Township Police have charged Apsley with drunken driving.

Renée Kiriluk-Hill, Hunterdon Democrat:

He was behind the wheel of Tender 32 on March 1, responding to a fire call in neighboring Branchburg when the accident happened. The fire truck overturned at about 11:30 p.m. on Brookview Road, around the corner from the firehouse.

Township police said today that the investigation continues. However, they said, Apsley was charged with drunken driving “because it was an accident and an odor of an alcoholic beverage was present.”
