While western Mass. is dealing with the tail end of a three-day snow storm, Palmer Fire and Police are now investigating how a deadly 2-alarm fire started at 1047 Pleasant Street in Palmer Monday night.

In that fire, one woman was killed. A neighbor who lives nearby said when he saw the flames and smoke, residents safety was his top priority.

Palmer’s Fire Chief said when he arrived, people were leaping out of third story windows straight onto snow banks. Three people were rushed to the hospital.

“Snow was a factor. Hydrants weren’t shoveled over in this corner so it slows things down,” said Palmer Fire Chief Alan Roy.

Conor Berry, MassLive.com:

“It was just a heck of a scene,” Roy said of the fire at 1047 Pleasant St.

The building is diagonally across from Palmer Fire Headquarters on Walnut Street, so firefighters’ response time was particularly fast.

“We had (tenants) jumping out of windows,” Roy said. “It was just a chaotic scene at first.”
