The ultimate revenge: Mice start fire that killed 100 cats. Just don’t read the fine print.

It sounds like something from a Tom and Jerry cartoon and it is making headlines around the world. One report cautions that the cause of the fire has not been officially determined, but what self-respecting journalist is going to let that get in the way of a good story.

Earlier in the week there was a tragic fire at the Durham Region Humane Society’s animal shelter in Oshawa, Ontario, that killed about 100 cats, three dogs and a few rabbits. Preliminarily, one theory on the fire is that it was sparked by mice chewing through electrical wires in the ceiling. And that is good enough for me and hundreds of other reporters around the world and the web.

But there is also that one article from Jillian Follert at newsdurhamregion.com who apparently wants to let the facts get in the way. She starts her article by throwing cold water on our hot story:

Despite media reports that indicate mice could be to blame for the fire that gutted the Durham Region Humane Society earlier this week, one shelter official says it’s too early to point to a cause.

It goes on to say:

Shelter manager Ruby Richards was quoted by various media Wednesday as saying preliminary reports indicate the blaze started in the ceiling and may have been sparked by mice chewing through electrical wiring.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office could not be reached to confirm that theory.

The important thing to remember is that it could have happened that way. Clearly someone doesn’t have much of a future in this business.
