Three dead in hazardous materials explosion on I-81: Around 11:30 last night a tractor trailer carrying a corrosive cleaning agent ran into a median on I-81 at mile marker 284, near Woodstock, VA, then bumped into another tractor trailer, causing an explosion that has killed three people. New fire chief for Montgomery County, MD: Sources tell STATter911.com, after an extensive search resulting in finalists from inside and outside the county, County Executive Isiah Leggett will announce at a 1:00 PM press conference that his choice for fire chief is the man who has filled that position since November, Richard Bowers. Chief Bowers took over the leadership of the department after the retirement of Chief Tom Carr.

I am sure he was focused on her wings: We are talking about the chicken wings 27-year-old Amanda Masker was trying to cook. The only problem is Masker had turned on the wrong burner and her apartment filled with smoke. Actually that’s not the only problem. The real trouble started when Scranton Firefighter John Judge tried to get Masker to leave the apartment while the fire department handled the smoke. Police say she refused and began beating on Firefighter Judge. Oh, did we mention she was naked at the time? (Geezer wouldn’t have forgotten that, just check out this recent story.) We will assume he wasn’t cooking sausages: Jimmy Dean, of country music and sausage fame, was home with his wife at the time of a fire at his Varina, Virginia home last night. The Deans are okay but it sounds like their house isn’t. Jimmy Dean, now 80, played many of the fire halls in Maryland and Virginia in the 50s. That’s when country music performance in the Washington area was probably second only to Nashville. Henrico County reports the fire broke out at around 8:00 PM and was still burning more than three-hours later. Water supply was a problem. Read more. Watch the story.

Two firefighters under investigation on handling of suicide victim: News reports indicate the Clark County, Nevada firefighters had called off EMS after a man with a terminal illness shot himself. They put a sheet over him. The only problem is he wasn’t dead. The man lived for two more days. Now an investigation is underway. Click here for the story.

Fairfax County to avoid layoffs: The budget was approved Monday in Fairfax County and the significant news for the fire department comes in this line from The Washington Post– “Supervisors restored some of the money initially cut for public safety programs, eliminating the need for layoffs among the uniformed ranks of the police and fire departments”.
