Videos from Janet Shumsky of a house fire Saturday on Route 25 in Stuyvesant Falls, New York (Columbia County) where a firefighter was rescued after falling through the floor. The firefighter is brought to safety via ladder in the video above.

According to news reports, the fire was started by a space heater in a bedroom. Before firefighters arrived, 8-year-old Caritey Taylor made sure everyone got out safely.

Arthur Cusano, Register-Star:

“She got everyone out of the building before we even got there,” (Stuyvesant Falls Fire Chief Ben) Webster said. “She must have been paying attention in fire safety class.”

The girl was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital with minor burns on her hand and singed hair and released, Boyle said.

Firefighters arrived at the home in less than five minutes but were slowed down by trees and wires around the home that prevented the use of ladder trucks. National Grid was requested to the scene to remove the trees and wires, Webster said.

Stuyvesant Fire Department responded to the blaze around 12:30am Saturday, with mutual aid from Stuyvesant Falls, Niverville, Valatie, Chatham, Stockport and Stottville.

Officials say one firefighter needed to be rescued after he fell through a floor and became trapped. He was taken to Albany Med with non-life-threatening injuries.

It took firefighters around 5 hours to put out the blaze.
