Caught on video: Watch blowtorch shoot from commercial building fire
Brief video, above, shows top floor flashing and a blowtorch shooting out one side of the building during a fire yesterday (Wednesday) in Nanaimo, BC.
Michael D. Reid, Times-Colonist:
A Nanaimo Fire Rescue spokesman said crews started battling the “active major structure fire” at a building that houses numerous businesses at Commercial Street and Terminal Avenue about 6:30 p.m.
Witnesses reported seeing thick, black smoke billowing from the two-storey building, with the night sky taking on an orange glow. The building, at 10 Commercial St., is believed to be about 100 years old.
Karen Lindsay, emergency program manager for the City of Nanaimo, says fire crews arrived to the building at 10 Commercial Street around 6:30 p.m. to find dark smoke and flames coming from inside.
“They couldn’t find where it originated from,” said Lindsay.
“It [the fire] kept moving throughout the building, which made it challenging. This is a very old building block.”
