Lots of raw video from Edgewater, NJ apartment complex conflagration

WCBS-TV:

A local state of emergency has been declared after a massive fire engulfed a New Jersey apartment complex, displacing hundreds of residents.

Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland says schools will be closed on Thursday and access to roads will be restricted due to the huge fire at The Avalon at Edgewater, a four-story apartment complex.

The blaze broke out around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and raged late into the night. The fire was raised to more than five alarms as embers spread and structures collapsed, according to Edgewater police.

The fire grew so large that the flames were visible from Midtown Manhattan and were even being picked up on the weather radar late Wednesday night.

“This is probably the biggest one I’ve ever seen,” said Bogota Fire Battalion Chief Joe Dimauro.

“It’s just horrible,” said complex resident Hamza Alkhayyat.
