Standard Speaker:

At least six people are homeless after fire ripped through a double house on West Fifth Street in Hazleton on Thursday afternoon.

Hazleton firefighters arrived within minutes of 12:35 p.m. blaze at 630-632 W. Fifth St., but lack of water hampered their efforts, Deputy Chief Brian Mandak said.

Hydrants that firefighters relied upon when two homes burned on James Street two years ago didn’t work, he said. Firefighters had to draw water from a hydrant at Locust and Sixth streets – more than two blocks away.
